Why Italy grows the best food in the world

Why Italy grows the best food in the world

The answer has nothing to do with recipes and everything to do with geography

There seems to be a very specific reason why Italy produces more protected food products than any other country in Europe, why the Mediterranean diet was born here, why certain corners of the peninsula are home to some of the longest-living people on earth. And that reason starts not with culture or tradition, but with geography.

Italy sits in an almost improbably fortunate position on the planet. It stretches like a long bridge between the cold of central Europe and the warmth of the Mediterranean, surrounded on almost every side by five distinct bodies of water whose continuous sea breezes keep winters gentle and summers from being overly harsh. The Alps stand to the north, shielding the country from the coldest continental winds. The Apennines run like a spine down the entire length of the boot, creating hundreds of distinct microclimates where cool mountain air descends into warm valleys at night, concentrating extraordinary flavor into every tomato, every grape, every olive.

Italians, of course, learned to read this land with intelligence, to farm it, to protect it, to celebrate its diversity. But the genius started in the geography.

The boot was placed in exactly the right spot. Everything else followed.
