Caffè sospeso: The 100-year-old solidarity hack still alive in Naples

A "suspended" coffee, one of the most human gestures in Italian culture

It's the vintage version of "paying it forward": *** il caffè sospeso***, the Neapolitan tradition of "suspended" coffee.

The practice took root in early 20th-century Naples and flourished during the severe economic hardships of World War II. When an ordinary local had reason to celebrate, or simply enjoyed a stroke of good fortune, they would pay for two espressos at their neighborhood bar, but drink only one. The second coffee remained "suspended" on the tab until a stranger in need walked in and politely asked if a sospeso was available.
